2009 Dodge Challenger Barracuda Concept

Back in April 2007 reports emerged claiming officials at Chrysler were considering creating a new Barracuda based on its Dodge Challenger, with none other than hot-rod legend Chip Foose dropping the suggestion at the New York Auto Show.

This new car sports a totally revised front-end with single projector headlights, a new grille and a black ‘shaker’ hood. The same story can be told for the rear, which also gets new lights, a central fuel-filler cap, and a small carbon-fiber bootlid spoiler.

There’s no official word from Chrysler on whether this vehicle will remain a pure concept or if it’s destined for production, but bringing the car to market would not be a difficult task when you consider most of the car’s internals would be shared with the Challenger.

As most readers would know, the original Cuda was sold as a Plymouth but since that brand has been dropped from Chrysler’s lineup this latest version would have to be sold either as a Dodge or Chrysler. Not surprisingly the concept vehicle is badgeless.

2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 Pricing

The flagship model of the remade Dodge Challenger, the new high-performance SRT8, will be priced from $37,995 when it goes on pre-order from December 3 onwards. The first batch of cars will be a limited edition run, each with a numbered dash plaque, and will be available in black, silver or HEMI orange. First deliveries will start next spring.

All the cars will come with dual ‘carbon-fiber; hood stripes and a 6.1L HEMI V8 engine. The SRT model also comes with a race-inspired interior, sports suspension, upgraded brakes and extra horsepower.

The all-new Dodge Challenger will be built at the Chrysler Canada Assembly Plant in Brampton, Ontario, on the same assembly line with the Dodge Charger, Magnum and Chrysler 300 models.

Challenger is going to be Dodge's number One

There’s been a lot of excitement surrounding the launch of the new Dodge Challenger, and officials are hoping this excitement won’t die off soon after the car hits the road as is often the case with hyped up sports cars. Chrysler lags its Detroit rivals in sales by a significant margin and desperately needs halo models like the Challenger, like the 300 before it, to be a hit with the public. If initial sales are anything to go by it appears Dodge may have pulled it off.

Officials expect to sell between 20,000 and 30,000 Challengers per year once the full lineup goes on sales, a modest target it seems considering the first full year run of the flagship SRT8 model (priced at $37,995) has already sold out. The information comes from Chrysler Vice Chairman Jim Press, who spoke recently with the Free Press. He also revealed that a waiting list has already formed for the 2009 model.

The Challenger’s closest rival is the popular Ford Mustang but Dodge is touting that its muscle car is the better choice, pointing out that it comes standard with antilock brakes, electronic stability control, curtain air bags, six-speed automatic transmission and keyless ignition, and features a five-link rear suspension as opposed to the Mustang’s archaic solid rear axle. “We’d rather run like a thoroughbred than ride like a pony,” Frank Klegon, Chrysler vice president of product development, said in a thinly veiled jab at the Mustang.

The standard Challenger models will be revealed during April’s New York Auto Show and will include lower-priced models with smaller V6 and V8 engines. There’s even plans for a convertible version further down the track.

After months of leaked images and drip-fed teasers Chrysler has finally released full details for its all-new 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 muscle car. The new model will be making its world debut this week at the Chicago Auto Show but it has actually been on sale since December of last year. The Challenger is the fourth vehicle to ride on Chrysler’s LX platform, succeeding the 300C, the Charger and the ill-fated Magnum, but unlike its siblings each SRT8 variant will come with a unique numbered dash plaque, carbon hood stripes, forged aluminum 20in alloys, and the SRT prepped 6.1L HEMI V8 engine complete with 425hp and 420lb-ft of torque.

Performance targets for the new Challenger SRT8 include a 0-60mph time in the low five-second range, 0-100-0mph in less than 17 seconds, a quarter mile time of less than 14 seconds, 60-0mph braking distance of approximately 110ft, and a skid pad performance of 0.88g. Transmission options include either a five-speed auto or six-speed manual, although the car will initially be available with the automatic only.

Though the 2008 Dodge is a pure-blooded muscle car it also comes packed with the latest in in-car technology. Some of the gadgets include GPS navigation, keyless start and entry, a MyGIG infotainment system and UConnect hands-free communication.

SRT8 models are limited to just three different colors, the familiar HEMI Orange, Bright Silver Metallic and Brilliant Black Crystal, so picking a color won’t be too hard when the first cars arrive in showrooms this spring. As earlier confirmed, the car will be manufactured at Chrysler’s Brampton, Ontario, Canada assembly plant and will be priced from just $37,995.

Dodge will follow up the SRT8 with regular Challenger models, which will be available with both V6 and V8 powerplants, but no official details have been released yet. Base models are expected to get a 3.5L V6 mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, while the mid-spec R/T will come with a 5.7L V8 engine.

Dodge Challenger Super Stock factory car in the works

Dodge used last year’s SEMA Auto Show to roll out a concept version of a Super Stock Challenger racer but like most outlandish concepts few suspected the car would go into production. At the time, officials did confirm the concept’s monster 392 HEMI V8 engine would eventually go on sale as an aftermarket crate engine but apparently that wasn’t the end of the story.

Latest reports claim the actual Super Stock Challenger concept will enter production and is set for launch within a couple of weeks after the debut of the standard Challenger at this month’s Chicago Auto Show. Some of the specs flying around internet discussion groups include a new lighter chassis, weighing up to 800 pounds less than the production car, unique serial build numbers, several different variants of the current 5.9L HEMI and Magnum engines, and both automatic and manual transmissions.

Racing elements include a lightweight front fascia support system, composite lift-off hood and functional scoop, an uprated cooling module with electric fan, new brakes and a set of racing seats.

As the car is purely meant for motorsports you can forget about such frills as windshield wipers, power windows, a rear seat and sound deadening.

Over the past few weeks a number of pictures of production Challengers have leaked onto the web, but now the leaks have brought along a nice front three-quarters view for all to see. The car looks - as expected - very much like the concept that has made the rounds from Barrett-Jackson to your local auto show. The teasers Dodge let slip almost two months ago also gave a good idea what the final car would look like, but now we can remove all doubt: the Challenger is here.

Due for its official public unveiling at the Chicago, the Challenger is the fourth vehicle to ride on Chrysler’s LX platform, succeeding the 300C, the Charger and the ill-fated Magnum. Just last week the first production Challenger took in a gargantuan $400,000 - although the proceeds went to charity.

Under the hood there are few surprises: a 6.1L Hemi V8 that populates others in Chrysler’s SRT8 range gives ample kick-in-the-pants fun, while the six-speed automatic stays true to its muscle-car roots, even if it adds some modern-day smoothness. Bringing the show to a safe and timely halt are four-piston Brembo brakes, also standard LX-platform SRT8 fare.

The details all seem to mimic the concept as closely as anyone could expect from a production car, although those with a sharp eye will notice the chrome cross-hair grille is gone, and in its place are a series of thin, flat-black squares - and homage to the original.

The first coupe to be built on the LX platform, the Challenger is four inches shorter (at 116in) than its corporate compadres, which yields a slightly lighter weight, reports Automotive News. This should make the 425hp, 420 lb-ft Hemi seem a bit livelier, and will contribute to better handling and stopping distances. Fuel economy should also be slightly more palatable than other SRT8s, but let’s face it - you’re not buying this car for its green image.

Dodge ZEO concept let loose at NAIAS

As petroleum prices skyrocket and hydrogen fuel-cells remain in the semi-distant future, more and more auto makers are turning to the electric vehicle as the solution for the present. The futuristic styling aside, the Dodge ZEO presents a decent argument for the practical possibilities of an EV. Not that those futuristic looks are in any way out of place or unwelcome - Dodge’s new EV is rather sexy.

The 2+2 mates practicality with electro-hot-rod tendencies, such as the 23-inch rims, the muscular fender swells and the powerful 200kW (268hp) electric motor - the same one powering the hydrogen fuel-cell ecoVoyager concept. The combination of strong power and light weight give the ZEO a 0-60mph time that should come in under five seconds, according to Chrysler, which it says ‘rivals [its] famed HEMI powerplant.’

The dramatic exterior styling is the focus of the ZEO, which draws inspiration from muscle cars of the past, mathematical concepts and tried-and-true principles of aerodynamics. The heavily sloped A-pillars are derived from the Möbius strip - a loop with only one exterior surface - that twists and joins into the rearward part of the canopy. The wrap-around windshield runs from the front almost all the way to the rear, giving a jet-like canopy to the sporty EV. Scissor doors and unique lighting accents finish the ‘custom’ feel of the ZEO.

Inside, organic forms are the mode. Aimed at the younger market - people who might actually buy such a car - the ZEO is replete with technological gadgetry. The long, narrow center console divides the cockpit into two regions, rising at the rear to complete the division. The unique steering-column/instrument panel unit are freestanding.

Weighing in at just 2,650lbs, the ZEO provides approximately a 10:1 lbs/hp ratio - just slightly better than a Nissan 350Z. Wheelbase and overall length are close to the Z as well, and with its 2+2 architecture (like the Mazda RX-8) the rear-wheel drive ZEO could prove to be a serious contender - and not just among EVs. Although, with a range of just 250mi, it’s not quite ready for long-distance touring.

Production Dodge Demon to get Chinese FWD platform

It’s hard to overestimate the thirst of the American auto market for sexy, sporty, small roadsters – while sales of the Pontiac Solstice may be slowing down, the Saturn Sky is taking off, and the Mazda Miata MX-5 is holding more or less steady as it has for nearly two decades. Not surprisingly, Chrysler is keen to get its own piece of the pie and has already shown us what’s possible with last year’s Dodge Demon concept. The only problem is that, financially, things are looking a little worse for wear.

There is hope on the horizon but it will come at a cost. According to AutoWeek, Chrysler could call on its Chinese partner Chery to supply a low-cost FWD platform for the car. Chrysler would essentially engineer its own design on top of the Chery platform.

“A small sports car is still on our wish list and in the product plan,” Chrysler’s Tom LaSorda told reporters today at the Detroit Auto Show. “The Demon is a B-segment size car and it would be on the new B-segment platform from China.”Cost isn’t the only reason for using the WD platform. Emissions regulations is another issue, LaSorda explained.

Dodge Challenger Production Details

Chrysler revealed pricing information for its Dodge Challenger SRT8 and now the car’s options list has been leaked onto the internet thanks to several forums. According to the source, the first Challengers will be SRT8 models all equipped with five-speed automatic transmissions as standard. Further down the track will be the release of six-speed manual versions as well as the non-SRT8 models, which will either come in 3.5L V6 or 5.7L V8 HEMI guises. The SRT8 will come with a 6.1L HEMI V8 as standard.

The manual models will get a new Hill Start Assist (HSA) feature, which works by applying the brakes for a short time when the driver lifts their foot off the brake pedal. In 2009, Dodge will release a convertible model and in 2011 the 3.5L V6 engine will be replaced with a new 4.0L Phoenix engine. The 6.1L HEMI is also expected to get an update, with a 6.4L version with around 450 to 500hp rumored to be in the works.

As for the SRT8’s options and features, these will include a 13 speaker Kicker stereo, 20in aluminum alloy wheels shod with 245mm rubber, a rear differential, fog lights, a hood scoop and stripes, a leather wrapped steering wheel and shift-knob and a rear spoiler.

No Dodge Challenger for Europe

The upcoming Dodge Challenger will not be sold in European markets as the car will only be manufactured in limited numbers with many American fans likely to miss out as well. The decision was apparently made by Chrysler’s new owners, Cerberus Capital Management, who actually overturned plans made by Chrysler’s previous management team, reports AutoTelegraaf.

The final production version of the new Dodge Challenger will be revealed at the Chicago Auto Show on the 15th of February next year, and is expected to enter production at Chrysler’s Brampton plant later that same year.

All is not loss for European fans of American muscle. If there’s enough demand, private importers may sell the car across Europe in limited numbers but potential buyers will undoubtedly be facing a substantial markup. There’s no word if Chevrolet’s new Camaro will make it across the Atlantic but Ford offers some solace with its Mustang range.

Dodge is preparing to debut the new Journey crossover, a new model marking the carmaker’s attempt to break into the burgeoning CUV market. The Journey will be an international player for Dodge, competing with the likes of Subaru’s Forester, Mitsubishi’s Outlander and Toyota’s recently updated Highlander. The new model’s running gear is built around a modified Dodge Avenger platform, which has been lengthened by 124mm to make room for its 5+2 seating and to create more interior space.

Available in both front wheel drive and all wheel drive layouts, the Dodge Journey can be optioned with a 3.5L V6 making 235hp (175kW) and 314Nm (232ft-lb) of torque. Other engines include a 2.4L inline four generating 173hp (129kW) and 224Nm (166ft-lb) of torque and a 2.7L FFV V6 producing 186hp (134kW) and 259Nm (191ft-lb) of torque.

In the looks department it’s significantly toned down compared with the other chrome clad monstrosities that Dodge has been trying to sell us, but when combined with the ‘Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat’ and optional 19in wheels you should be able to bring some street cred to the family car.

E85 Viper breaks standing mile record

We reported about the failed attempt of Karl Jacob to break the land speed record for the standing mile in an E85 ethanol fueled Dodge Viper. We can now report that on his second attempt, Jacobs and his team have claimed the record for a street legal vehicle with a top speed of 220.7mph (355kmh). The previous record, held by a petrol powered car was 217.8mph (350kmh).

The car is a street-legal bio-fueled Viper that produces close to 1,100hp and was developed to show that the words ‘alternative fuel’ and ‘high-performance’ can be used in the same sentence. During the development phase, Jacob and his team discovered that renewable fuel performs much better than today’s petrol fuels because the burning of ethanol in bio-fuel has the positive side effect of cooling the combustion chambers, resulting in more peak power.

Chrysler worried about quality of China built cars

To quell fears of substandard quality for products sourced from its Chinese partner Chery Auto, Chrysler personnel will be on hand in China early in the development and manufacturing phases to ensure that the cars meet global quality and safety standards.

Together with Chery, Chrysler will be launching a new global B-segment model, however, Chrysler exec Steven Landry revealed to Automotive News that the hope is to introduce models in all volume segments.

For its new Chery-built small car, Landry mentions cars like the Honda Fit and Chevrolet Aveo as the most likely competitors. However, before the car reaches the US, it will initially be launched in countries that have less stringent safety requirements so that any quality problems can be addressed before it reaches North America.

Impounded Dodge Viper turned into Police Car

A man charged with doing 127mph in a 35 zone in Illinois has had his car turned over to local police, who have subsequently converted it into a patrol car. The car in question is a black 2000 model-year Dodge Viper with a cognac leather interior. Since joining the police fleet, the Viper has been given a new black and white paintjob and fitted with a siren and lights.

The car been enlisted into the police’s D.A.R.E. unit and will be used at community events, block parties, parades and schools, reports the Herald News.

The reason for the harsh penalty is not only because of speeding, but because police had to chase the driver, who continued to swerve through traffic and attempted to hide in a parking lot.

While being fingerprinted, the driver requested that the car be stored under shelter because of its like-new condition. Little did he know that he was about to lose the keys to his pride and joy.

VW, Mitsubishi and Chery to develop minicar with Chrysler

It’s well document that China’s Chery Auto will be working closely with Chrysler for the development of a new Chinese built model to be sold in the US, but latest reports are suggesting that Chery might not be the only carmaker in bed with Chrysler. There’s also talk of Chery building a second model for Chrysler, which will be sold by the American automaker in emerging markets such as South America and Eastern Europe.

According to AutoWeek, Chrysler is expected to make an announcement very soon outlining its plans for a production version of the Hornet Concept car that was first displayed at last year’s Geneva Motor Show. The latest news is that Volkswagen AG and Mitsubishi will be involved in the car’s development, most likely to supply the project with a range of world-class powertrains.

The original concept car featured a supercharged four-cylinder petrol engine that develops 170hp, but the production car will likely be offered with both petrol and turbodiesel options.

E85 fueled Dodge Viper attempted to break the world land-speed record

Karl Jacob has attempted to break the world land-speed record for the standing mile in a street-legal E85 fueled Dodge Viper that produces close to 1,100hp. The attempt took place on the 17th of this month at the Mojave Air and Space Port, but no official times have been released.

Jacob is using the E85 Viper as a way to show that the words ‘alternative fuel’ and ‘high-performance’ can be used in the same sentence, commenting that the car “proves that enthusiasts can continue pursuing their passion without having to rely on conventional fuel”.

During the development phase, Jacob and his team discovered that renewable fuel performs much better than today’s gasoline. The burning of ethanol in biofuel has the positive side effect of cooling the combustion chambers, resulting in more peak power.

Updated: The ethanol fueled Viper failed to break its own previous best of 189mph in the standing mile despite ideal conditions at the Mojave Airport site. After a couple of good runs, problems with the engine’s management system meant that organizers had to postpone the event.

Chrysler launching Hemi V8 powered hybrids

The Chrysler Group will be adding hybrid versions of its Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen vehicles for the 2008 model year, with both vehicles getting a 5.7L Hemi V8 engine mated to an electric motor. The hybrid vehicles will hit showrooms next year and are expected to improve mileage rates by 25%, while increasing efficiency by nearly 40% in stop-start city driving. It’s the best of both worlds, a powerfull SUV with big-cube V8 power plus MDS and hybrid tech saving you fuel.

Chrysler exec Frank Klegon, who spoke with The Detroit News, described the Hemi-powered Chrysler Aspen Hybrid as the “ultimate combination of fuel efficiency, overall performance and capability in a premium full-size SUV.” The eco-friendly SUV will feature a fuel-saving multi-displacement system that can shut down four of the engine’s eight cylinders during low load conditions.

The hybrid system used in the Aspen and Durango is the latest Two-Mode version co-developed with General Motors and BMW, and pairs an electric motor with the V8 engine. Under minimal load, the SUVs can run on electric power alone and can then switch to employ both power sources during heavy demand. We wouldn’t be surprised if Chrysler’s 300C sedan also picks up the hybrid option with its own V8 Hemi powerplant in the near future.

GM is expected to follow-up with its own hybrid SUV, the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid due early next year.

Dodge Challenger to be built in Canada

DaimlerChrysler has confirmed that the upcoming Dodge Challenger will be manufactured at its Brampton plant located west of Toronto. Production of the new Challenger is scheduled to start in the first half of next year, joining the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Dodge Magnum wagon, which are already sourced from the Canadian plant.

The Chrysler Group is in the midst of a restructuring program that could potentially see up to 10,000 jobs in the US and 2,000 jobs in Canada slashed. The confirmation of the Challenger’s production at Brampton will ensure the plant’s viability into the near future, however, no extra jobs are expected to be created. In a similar move, the Challenger’s main rival, the revived Chevrolet Camaro, will also be constructed in Canada at General Motor’s plant in Oshawa.

GM announced today its own plans to build hybrid versions of its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks at the Oshawa truck assembly plant east of Toronto. The same Oshawa site is being converted to accommodate GM’s new Zeta architecture. The Camaro has been confirmed, but we may also see production of the Pontiac G8, or a possible Chevrolet Impala replacement, eventuate in Canada as well.

2008 Dodge Daemon - New roadster concept

Dodge has revealed its new Demon Roadster Concept. The vehicle sits in the same mould as cars like the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Pontiac Solstice, and is described as a compact, affordable “roadster with an attitude.” The Demon features Dodge’s signature cross-hair grille, but the main character line, angular color-keyed vents and muscular fenders are all new according to the project’s head designer Jae Chung.

Other key design traits include the ‘angel-eye’ style headlight ornament, 19in brushed aluminum wheels and chromed vertical grab handles. Inside, the car gets brushed aluminum trim, a leather-bound manual shift knob plus the usual mod-cons. One feature that’s unlikely to make it into production is the exposed low-gloss carbon fiber shells backing the contoured racing-style bucket seats.

Beneath the new sheet metal resides a completely new platform and DaimlerChrysler’s global 2.4L four-cylinder engine developing 172hp and 165lb/ft of torque. Drive is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, however, a sequential auto will definitely be an option for any production version along with several other small displacement four-bangers and a possible 300hp turbo unit.

Rumours about new roadster from Dodge

Dodge is rumoured to be working on a small rear-wheel-drive roadster along the lines of the popular Mazda MX-5 and more recent Pontiac Solstice. UK’s Autocar is reporting that auto industry insiders in the US have now confirmed the car is in development and that it has already been displayed to key members of the media. The source claims the car will be “a carbon copy of the Mazda MX-5,” and it’ll also pick up styling cues from the Dodge Razor concept pictured above that was displayed back in 2002. A near-production ready concept is tipped to be unveiled at March’s Geneva Motor Show.

Chrysler Group design chief Trevor Creed has stated previously that “the small sports car market is an ideal fit for Dodge,” and that competition in this segment is not as intense as others. Even Chrysler CEO Tom La Sorda believes the vehicle would be an ideal addition to Dodge’s lineup, but whether it’s financially viable is still a major issue. “It’s something we should certainly look at,” he said, “but it has limited volume and there are other new segments where maybe the business case is better.”

The new Dodge Avenger was originally revealed at the Paris Motor Show in concept form, but it was really just a production model shown early to gauge interest. The Avenger replaces the aging Stratus as Dodge’s new midsize sedan and will be produced at Chrysler’s Sterling Heights plant alongside its Sebring line of cars.

Four models offered in the US: SE, SXT, R/T, and for the first time, a R/T AWD. US models have following engine options: 2.4L four-cylinder , 2.7L V6 engine, and a 3.5L V6 engine coupled with a new six-speed automatic transaxle with Auto Stick. The highest model will get 235 horsepower and 232 lb.-ft. of torque, which is quite decent for a car in this segment.

Inside, this is potentially the most gadget-laden car in this segment with a variety of cool features. You get a storage compartment to hold four cans and cool them with the AC, a heating/cooling front cupholder, rear DVD-entertainment system, and the MyGIG, a 20GB hard drive based navigation and music system.

Chrysler has taken the wraps off its new 2008 Dodge models, with the first being the Dodge Magnum, which has had a minor restyling as well as the introduction of an updated SRT model.

The 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 is more menacing than ever with a completely redesigned hood, grille, front fascia and a functional performance hood scoop.

Under the hood is the 6.1L HEMI V8, delivering 425hp and 569Nm of torque, contributing to a 0–60mph time in the low 5-second range and 0–100–0 mph in less than 17 seconds.

The standard models get chrome elements added to the front fascia and grille and extra detailing around the fog lamps. You can also choose optional xenon headlights and the interior gets a minor update too.

The 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 is more menacing than ever with a completely redesigned hood, grille, front fascia and functional performance hood scoop. The 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 remains true to the SRT credo of “Race inspired, street legal” with 0–60 mph performance in the low 5-second range while, at the same time, maintaining all of the utility and convenience features the entire 2008 Dodge Magnum lineup has to offer.

Aggressive Performance-inspired Exterior and Race-inspired Interior

A redesigned hood, front fascia and new grille highlight the extensive changes on the new 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8. A functional performance hood scoop has also been added.

The black honeycomb insert of the crosshair grille and air inlet of the front fascia increases brake cooling. The front fascia itself provides an aerodynamic benefit by reducing lift. The 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 rides on 20-inch aluminum, SRT-designed wheels wearing 245/45/ZR20 (front) and 255/45/ZR20 (back) F1 Goodyear tires.

Available exterior colors for the 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 are Bright Silver Metallic, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat, Steel Blue Metallic Clear Coat and TorRed.

On the inside, the new 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 maintains its race-inspired environment. Enhancements for 2008 include agate-color accent stitching, carbon-fiber leather-trim door handles, and LED lighting in the cup holders and door-map pockets.

The 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 continues to feature power-adjustable, deeply sculpted and highly bolstered sport seats with performance suede inserts in the front, an improved grip-enhancing carbon-fiber leather-trim steering wheel, and full-performance instrumentation, including a 180-mph (300-kph) speedometer, a tachometer and a temperature gauge.

“That thing gotta HEMI?”

Under the newly designed hood of the 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 is the 6.1-liter HEMI V-8, delivering 425 horsepower (317 kW) and 420 lb.-ft. (569 N•m) of torque, contributing to a performance roster that includes a 0–60 mph time in the low 5-second range and 0–100–0 mph in under 17 seconds.

New for 2008, drivers can receive instant feedback on their personal performance numbers from a newly available ReConfigurable Display (RCD) in the cluster. Power for the SRT 6.1-liter HEMI is channeled through a five-speed automatic transmission with specially calibrated, driver-selectable Auto Stick, which offers fully automatic or manual shifting selection.

All-around SRT Driving Performance

The new 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 provides all-around driving performance with SRT-tuned dampers, tailored spring rates and suspension bushings and large-diameter anti-sway bars. For added stability and aerodynamic benefit, the ride height of the Magnum SRT8 is one-half inch lower than the Dodge Magnum R/T, SXT and SE models, while the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) has been specially tuned for the 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8’s performance-handling characteristics.

Benchmark braking is a hallmark of SRT performance and design. The 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 features tried and true Brembo performance calipers, finished in red. Each is equipped with four pistons, gripping 360 mm x 32 mm vented rotors up front, with 350 mm x 26 mm vented rotors in the rear. The results: 60–0 mph stopping distance of approximately 110 feet.

Design changes to the 2008 Dodge Magnum R/T, SXT and SE can be seen in the signature Dodge crosshair front grille which has been lowered and stretched horizontally to create a more aggressive look. Chrome elements added to the front fascia and grille and extra detailing around the fog lamps provide additional interest and refinement to the face of the new Magnum.

The Magnum R/T features optional Xenon high intensity discharge (HID) elements in the headlamps for greater visibility while adding a sophisticated, high-tech look to the exterior.

The hood of 2008 Dodge Magnum models features expressive accent lines that run from the leading edge towards the windshield, highlighting its muscular character and hinting at the power beneath. The 2008 Dodge Magnum continues to offer a no-nonsense functional interior with well-appointed upgrades including soft-touch surfaces on the arm rests and the top of the center console, a new cruise control stalk and optional LED lighting, which illuminates the cup holders and door-map pockets. Brighter, chromed highlights have been added to the interior cabin of the R/T and SXT models.

The instrument panel has been redesigned to offer a more driver-oriented layout. The clean lines and easy-to-read gauges are highlighted with chrome bezels to deliver additional interest.

Most Powerful Engine Options in its Class

The 2008 Dodge Magnum R/T is equipped with a modern 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine featuring MDS. MDS seamlessly alternates between four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V-8 mode when more power is demanded, increasing fuel economy as much as 20 percent without sacrificing vehicle performance. Drivers may be informed when four-cylinder mode is active by selecting the new fuel-economy display available through the optional Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC).

The 5-7-liter HEMI V-8 engine provides 340 horsepower (254 kW) @ 5000 rpm and 390 lb.-ft. of torque (525 N•m) @ 4000 rpm and offers an EPA fuel economy rating of 17/25 (city/hwy)*.

Also available in the 2008 Dodge Magnum lineup is the 3.5-liter High Output V-6 engine, which provides 250 horsepower (186 kW) @ 6400 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of torque (340 N•m) @ 3800 rpm and a fuel economy rating of 19/27 (city/hwy)*.

China’s Chery confirms small-car deal with DaimlerChrysler

Chinese state media is reporting that up-and-coming carmaker Chery has struck a deal with DaimlerChrysler to build small cars. The Beijing Morning Post quoted Wang Wei, a spokesman for Chery, as saying “we will formally release the details (of the deal) in one month, if not earlier.”

DCX chief Tom LaSorda has previously admitted he was in talks with a Chinese carmaker that could expand their small car offerings. The new import would likely be sold as an entry-level Dodge subcompact and would fill the void of Chrysler’s lack of both an a or b-segment car in its portfolio.

The Beijing newspaper was also quoted as saying that Chery would become the new production center for Dodge and would supply the global market with small, economical, and fuel-efficient cars. A production version of the Dodge Hornet (pictured above) is a sure bet.

The news comes shortly after Chery’s deal with Malcolm Bricklin to import cars directly to the US fell through due to a disagreement over the way cars should be produced for overseas markets.

2008 Dodge Viper SRT10

The Dodge Viper has never been short of power, but the latest iteration due as a 2008 model gives buyers an additional 90hp, to make a total of 600hp. To achieve this, Dodge has had to tweak the engine by increasing bore size by 1-millimeter, raising the displacement to 8.4L from 8.3L. The SRT10 now delivers performance figures of 0-60mph in under four seconds, 0-100-0mph in just over 12 seconds.

It’s not just power that Dodge engineers have increased. The Brembo-built brake rotors are now 14-inches and can stop the SRT10 from 60-0mph in less than 100 feet. The manual gearbox has been upgraded to a dual-disc clutch, and the six-speed manual has wider gears for better torque throughout the range. Dodge claims the new SRT10 is a better handler, too, with changes to the suspension and a new LSD that’s supposed to provide better traction. We’ll have to try it ourselves to see if there’s any improvement over the generally disappointing handling of the current model.

Externally, there’s a more efficient hood scoop for air induction and larger, functional hood louvers to facilitate a greater cooling effect for the more engine underneath.

Chrysler confirms Dodge Avenger production

An internal memo from Chrysler HQ to its dealer network outlined the company’s plans to start building the Dodge Avenger and eventually, launch an all-new minivan by September next year. Somehow reporters got their hands on it, with the details now printed in an article from the Detroit Free Press. The memo confirmed also that we’ll be able to see the Avenger in showrooms by February. Remember that the car was first displayed in concept/prototype form at the Paris Motor Show.

The Avenger replaces the Stratus old-timer as Dodge’s new midsize sedan, and will be produced at Chrysler’s Sterling Heights plant alongside its Sebring line of cars. Unlike Ford and GM, who are dropping their range of minivans, Chrysler, the company that invented the segment, will be releasing the next-generation of its Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country.
